After the Rain Rabbitry

 Sales & Visiting Policies

Please read this page thoroughly before purchasing a rabbit from us! Thank you!

Pricing Information

Our prices are based on attributes and characteristics like generation (purebred/hybrid), breed, color, size, type, rarity, gender, mane type (if Lionhead or Lionlop), bloodlines, overall quality, and the general prices of other rabbitries across the USA that sell rabbits similar to ours.

Our usual price ranges are listed on our Pricing page. Occasionally a rabbit will be priced higher or lower than these figures.

We reserve the right to alter the price of a rabbit at any time unless a deposit has already been placed on it.

Discounts are available for 2 or more junior rabbits purchased at the same time. $5 off each rabbit if you buy 2, or $10 off each rabbit if you buy 3 or more. Discounts do not apply to senior rabbits.

We also offer 4H and youth breeder discounts. Email us for more information.

Reserving Your Rabbit

Our rabbits are held and sold on a first come, first serve basis with a deposit.

A $20 deposit is required to hold a rabbit for you for any length of time. Deposits can be sent through PayPal. Please email us for the PayPal email address and instructions on how to send payment. You do not have to own a Paypal account to send a deposit through Paypal.

If the bunny you are interested in is ready for adoption now: A deposit must be received and a pick-up time must be arranged before we will place a rabbit on hold for you. If for any reason you need us to hold a rabbit for more than a week, the entire price of the rabbit will need to be received upfront in addition to a "room and board" surcharge. However, we can only offer to hold rabbits for any length of time if we have enough cage space, so please inquire first. We usually do not have any extra cages and most of the time we cannot keep rabbits on hold for more than a few days or a week if they are ready to go now.

If you see a baby rabbit in the "Nursery" section that you would like: Please feel free to inquire about it and if it is available, we will place it on hold for you with a deposit (or put your name on the waiting list if there are others ahead of you*).

*Nursery Waiting List: If you are on the waiting list for a litter in the nursery, the "picking and choosing" will begin at 1-3 weeks of age once characteristics like gender and color are discernable. We will contact you when it is your turn to choose which rabbit you would like. We expect you to respond with an answer within 24 hours -- this way we can keep the waiting list moving. If we do not hear back from you within these 24 hours, your name will be removed from the waiting list and the next person in line will have their choice. If you select a bunny that you would like to purchase, we will request a $20 deposit to officially reserve the kit you have chosen. If a deposit is not received within 24 hours of this request, the rabbit will become available to the next person in line to inquire about it.

We reserve the right to refuse to sell our rabbits to anyone, for any reason, at any time.

Any remaining balance is to be paid in cash upon pick up.

Refunds and Returns

Deposit and payment refunds are not available unless something actually happens to the rabbit. If you change your mind or cannot pick up your rabbit (for any reason) within the timeframe required, your deposit (and any payments) will be forfeited.

If you place a deposit on one of our rabbits and it unexpectedly falls ill or dies before you pick it up, a full refund will of course be provided. Or the deposit may be applied to another rabbit if you wish.

Please note that some young rabbits between the ages of 4-6 weeks are at risk for digestive distress that can result in death. These unfortunate loses are called "faders." These rabbits simply stop eating and "fade" away. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to save them. If you have placed a deposit on a bunny and it turns out to be a "fader," we will of course refund your deposit or apply it toward another rabbit if you wish. We have only ever had this happen once, but we want everyone to be informed just in case. Gail Gibbons writes about these unfortunate loses: "Faders, or wasters as they are sometimes called, are usually the smallest (and sadly often the most desired) kit in the litter. They seem normal up until about 4 weeks of age, and sometimes even up to 6 weeks. They don't make the adjustment to solid food and begin to waste away. They will sit hunched up and listless away from the rest of the litter, won't eat or drink, and rapidly lose weight. Death usually occurs within days of first signs. There's speculation that this is a degree of dwarfism with an under-developed digestive system."

Refunds are not offered for any rabbit that has been picked up. The only exception to this is if the rabbit falls ill or dies within 5 days after pick-up despite being treated gently, kept from poisons, heat, chill, and injuries, and cared for properly (in the way that our care sheet outlines). In this case we will most likely provide a full refund. We will not reimburse you for any vet visits or medication. If the rabbit was injured, mistreated, exposed to anything toxic, exposed to unhealthy temperature conditions, or not fed and cared for the way our care sheet suggests, we will not provide a refund.

Our rabbits will always have a home here. We do not want any of our bunnies to ever end up in an animal shelter! If at any point in time you find yourself in a situation where you can no longer keep the bunny you purchased from us, please contact us and we will take the bunny back (either to live here permanently or to be re-homed).

All sales are final for bunny supplies you buy from us. We don't offer refunds, returns or exchanges on merchandise.

Pick-Up Information

Rabbits must be picked up in a timely manner!

Unfortunately we do not have extra cage space to hold onto bunnies for an indefinite or unplanned period of time. Please email us to schedule an appointment to pick up your bunny, and please arrive promptly at the scheduled time.

Effective as of December 2009: A $10 fee will be applied if a buyer arrives more than 15 minutes late for the pre-arranged appointment to pick up their rabbit(s). There will be a $15 fee for missed appointments (or canceled appointments within one hour of the pre-arranged pick up time). We maintain a very busy schedule and have had numerous people arrive 30+ minutes late or not even show up at all, many times without even calling to advise, causing us to miss appointments elsewhere, reschedule our plans for the day, and in other ways inconvenience our time. Please know that we maintain our rabbitry as a fun activity in addition to running two businesses and managing daily chores around our home, and we do not have open pick up hours where you can stop by anytime. Thank you for your consideration.

Please note that it is your responsibility to double-check your bunny's gender and color at pick up before you take it home. We do our best to determine the sex and color of our rabbits correctly, but sometimes it can be  hard to tell and we can't guarantee that we'll never make a mistake! We ask that you personally check to make sure that your rabbit is the correct gender and color before it goes home with you. We do not offer refunds on incorrectly-sexed or colored rabbits that have been picked up, however we may offer an exchange or replacement bunny depending on the situation.

Kits are ready to be picked up at 8 weeks old. We usually wean our kits at 7 weeks old, but we like to give them at least a week to adjust to being without their mother before adopting them out. They are given probiotics during this time to help ease the transition.

We can sometimes deliver to Staunton, Waynesboro, Crozet, Charlottesville, Earlysville and Ruckersville. We do ask a $10 - $30 travel fee depending on the distance. Occasionally we also make trips to meet up with other breeders, so feel free to ask if we might have a trip planned in the near future.

We do not ship rabbits. However, we do sometimes have buyers from other states, so we might know of someone heading in your direction that could provide transportation for your bunny. Since we don't offer shipping, we try to use "bunny railroads" when possible.

All rabbits come with pedigrees. Our kits now come with 4-generation pedigrees.

Every rabbit leaves with a care package. This includes a care sheet, a toy, some timothy hay, and a baggy of the food they are used to (Manna Pro, mixed with Calf Manna and Quaker Oats if the bunny is younger than 5 months). It is VERY important that they are transitioned over to a new kind of food slowly. We of course recommend that you simply keep them on Manna Pro feed -- it is great quality and highly nutritious. Inexpensive, too. You can find it at the Tractor Supply Company. There is a Tractor Supply Co. in Charlottesville, Staunton, Lexington, Lynchburg, Harrisonburg, Winchester, Warrenton, Culpeper, Orange, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and several other locations in Virginia.

Please bring something to transport your bunny home in! If you don't have a pet carrier or a small animal travel cage, a cardboard box with a towel or blanket in it will do just fine.

Please pay in cash upon pick-up!

Visiting Policies

In general, we do not allow visitors in our actual rabbitry. Our rabbitry is small and located on our private property. We are not a store, a bunny mill, or a petting zoo, and we do not have open visiting hours. We simply raise rabbits as a fun activity (although it seems more like a full time job sometimes with the amount of work we put into it!). Our actual rabbitry building is off-limits to visitors. We like to keep our rabbits relaxed and peaceful, and strangers in the barn can be very upsetting for them. Rabbits recognize sounds, smells and people, and they can be alarmed when someone new walks in. This is especially true of pregnant or nursing does.

We have pictures up of all our available rabbits so that you can "pick through" them online. If you feel that you need to meet a bunny or a litter of bunnies (or the sire/dam of a particular litter) in order to choose a rabbit, we are happy to set up a time for you to visit with that  specific litter, sire/dam, or rabbit outside the rabbitry. You can also take a quick "peek" into the bunny barn while you are here, although entrance is not permitted (we hope you understand!). Visits are limited to 15 minutes and we ask that parents supervise their children to ensure they are handling the rabbit(s) carefully.

If you would like to simply pick up your rabbit at our location, we are happy for you to do that. Please email to set up a time and get directions. We will have the rabbit, pedigree and care package ready for you when you arrive.

When you adopt a bunny from us, you will receive:

1. An amazing, incredibly adorable rabbit that has been raised in a loving and healthy environment. He or she will be nicely groomed before pick up.

2. A lovely pedigree, printed on nice paper and enclosed in a plastic sleeve and folder for protection.

3. A quart of the feed we use, to tide your bunny over for about a week until you can get to the feed store, or so that you can transition your bunny over slowly if you want to use another kind.

4. A quart of organic farm-cut timothy hay, for the same use.

5. A fun little toy to get your rabbit playtime collection started!

6. A care sheet that outlines the important basics of rabbit care, so you will know how to keep your bunny happy and healthy. Topics include introducing your bunny to its new home, feeding, grooming, litter box training, exercise and more.

7. A five-day health guarantee ~ we will always provide a refund or replacement during this time if something happens to your bunny as a direct result of our care.

8. A lifetime of customer service and support. If you ever have a question about your rabbit in the future, we are here to help and happy to provide advice!

Why We Charge What We Do

We are not breeding for profit. Realistically what people pay for our rabbits could never reimburse us for all the time (much less the money) that we have put into them. Rabbit breeding is a very time consuming, very expensive activity. We spend hours every day tending to the cares of our rabbitry because we love it, not because we are out for the money. In fact, all the money we get from rabbit sales goes right back into paying for feed, supplies, barn upkeep, cages and the rabbits that we purchase from other breeders. In the end we don't even come close to breaking even. But we love the experience, and we love the rabbits. It's truly rewarding in and of itself!

So why don't we just give our rabbits away? Because we need finances in order to afford to keep our rabbitry running. So that's why we actually charge money for our rabbits.

As far as how much we charge for each individual rabbit, our prices are based on things like generation (purebred/hybrid), breed, color, size, type, rarity, gender, mane type (if Lionhead or Lionlop), bloodlines, overall quality, and the general prices listed with other rabbitries across the USA that sell rabbits similar to ours.

Even still, those are just some of the things that make our bunnies worth what we ask for them. Here is a list of other factors that contribute to how much our bunnies are worth:

1. Our kits are handled from the day they are born and very used to human interaction. We put a lot of time and energy into making each bunny child-friendly and ready for a family life.

2. We take updated pictures and video of our kits weekly so that you can watch your own bunny grow up! This involves a lot of tedious work and time on our part, but our customers love being able to see their bunny develop. This is not something you are likely to find at many other rabbitries.

3. All of our rabbits come with pedigrees. Our kits now come with 4-generation pedigrees, which is an asset to breeders and an extra treat for pet owners. It's very fascinating to see who your bunny's 16 great-great-grandparents were! And here's a fun tip: Try doing a Google search on each name on your rabbit's pedigree (i.e. "Cimmaron's Firebear")... you might be surprised to find descriptions, pictures, and/or relatives of that bunny on other rabbitry websites!

4. When you purchase a rabbit from us, you get a lifetime of customer service and support. If you ever have a question about your rabbit, we are here to help and happy to provide advice. And if you ever come into a situation where you can no longer keep your bunny, we will happily take him/her back or help you to rehome him/her. We never want our bunnies to end up in shelters or without a home.

5. Our baby rabbits are raised on a wholesome and abundant diet of Manna Pro, Calf Manna, rolled oats and timothy hay.

6. We wait until 7-8 weeks to wean our kits and we give them probiotics during this stressful period to help them adjust.

7. All of the bunnies in our rabbitry, including the kits, are groomed on a regular basis. Each bunny receives individual care and attention. We brush them, clean them, trim their nails and make sure they are feeling and looking their best. You would be surprised at the number of rabbit breeders that do not take the time to do this.

8. Our kits are wormed and their nails are trimmed before leaving our rabbitry.

9. We do not sell to pet stores. From our experience, pet stores are not typically very knowledgeable about rabbits. They often can't even sex them correctly, and they usually recommend food and treats for your bunny that are just not healthy for them. We want our rabbits to remain healthy and well taken care of, so we only sell to pet homes and breeders, and we always provide a detailed care sheet about how to properly care for your new bunny.

10. All of our rabbits come with a care package, which includes a care sheet, baggy of food, baggy of timothy hay, and toy.

11. Our rabbitry is kept clean and sanitary, and is thoroughly hosed out and disinfected on a weekly basis. We do not simply "spot-clean." It takes 4-6 hours every week to clean our cages thoroughly but our bunnies are worth it!

12. Our rabbits are each housed separately in quality cages with comfy resting mats. The only time we have more than one rabbit to a cage is when they are babies (up to 4 months old).

13. Our rabbits always have fresh water and are given plenty of feed and timothy hay daily.

14. We provide our rabbits and kits with chew toys to support their dental health and keep them entertained.

15. Our herd consists of finely chosen pedigreed rabbits that have cost us a small fortune to purchase and/or raise.

16. Many of our rabbits are show quality and produce even better than themselves.

17. We raise many of the harder-to-find breeds and colors.

18. All of the bunnies in our herd are petted and talked to daily. We know each of our rabbits by name... yes, even the kits!
